DETROIT — Police say a woman was fatally shot while picking up her 11-year-old son from basketball practice in Detroit.

Detroit police spokeswoman Nicole Kirkwood tells The Detroit News a bystander called 911 on Wednesday evening after she was flagged down by the 42-year-old woman.

The shooting happened outside the Light Guard Armory.

Kirkwood says the woman was found bleeding inside her car with the driver's side window shattered and she was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The woman's name wasn't immediately released. Police say a 17-year-old was arrested nearby and was being held pending charges.

Kirkwood says the investigation is ongoing.
