PLEASANTON, California — A police officer shot and killed a man after an attempted burglary into an auto sales business in Pleasanton, located about 25 miles east of Oakland.

Pleasanton police Lt. Jeff Bretzig tells the Contra Costa Times (http://bayareane.ws/1KFGl1q ) that the officer, who was briefly hospitalized after the confrontation, will remain on paid administrative leave for an undetermined amount of time as a result of the shooting.

The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday after police responded to the report of a burglar alarm. Bretzig says officers found an agitated man in front of the business who then fled, leading to an altercation with the suspect and an officer.

The suspect was pronounced dead at Eden Medical Center. The identities of the suspect and the officer have not been released.
