AMHERST, Virginia — A circuit court judge serving Amherst and Nelson counties is retiring after 24 years on the bench.

Judge J. Michael Gamble's retirement was official on Saturday. But he will continue to serve until a successor takes over.

Gamble has served as a circuit court judge since 1991. He previously was a lawyer for nearly 17 years.

He tells The Daily Progress (http://bit.ly/1wAydd4 ) that it's time for him to retire. He says he might serve as a backup judge but he probably will tend to his flowers and spend time with his seven grandchildren.
