Man dies after crashing, getting pinned under golf cart during storm

OCALA, Florida — Authorities say a man died at a north Florida golf course after his cart tipped over during a downpour and landed on him.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office reports that 81-year-old Jim Smith and a passenger were near the 10th hole at Oak Run golf course Monday when the accident occurred.

The passenger, who had been playing with Smith, told deputies that it had just started to rain hard with lightning and thunder, and they were trying to get back to the clubhouse. With little visibility, Smith reportedly drove over the edge of a sand trap and got pinned beneath the cart.

The Ocala Star-Banner ( ) reports that the other man went for help. Fire rescue officials responded and pronounced Smith dead.
