Police identify body found in Hudson River as Dutchess County man missing since January

BETHLEHEM, New York — Police say a body found in the Hudson River near Albany has been identified as that of an upstate New York man who was reported missing in January.

Town of Bethlehem police say the body found Tuesday is that of 41-year-old David P. Betterton of Dutchess County. He was reported missing to state police in Wappinger Falls on Jan. 19.

His body was found at the North Albany Terminal dock at the oil storage company's property on the river's west bank.

Police say they determined his body became snagged on a barge heading upriver from New Jersey on Tuesday, when it dislodged after the barge docked.

An autopsy determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma and asphyxia due to drowning. Foul play has been ruled out and the investigation has been closed.
