Pennsylvania man gets 30 to 80 years in prison for killing pregnant girlfriend, unborn child

SOMERSET, Pennsylvania — A western Pennsylvania man will spend 30 to 80 years in prison for killing his pregnant girlfriend and her unborn child last year.

Twenty-six-year-old Denver Blough was sentenced Tuesday by a Somerset County judge.

He had previously pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in the May 2014 shooting death of 23-year-old Caressa Kovalcik, who was 8½ months pregnant. Her daughter was delivered but died three weeks later.

Blough has claimed his 20-gauge shotgun accidentally discharged in the victim's face after he broke it in half during an argument. He also pleaded guilty to recklessly endangering the couple's 11-month-old son, who was six feet away.

Kovalcik's parents, Anne and Robert, didn't want to pursue a life sentence or death penalty for the sake of the surviving baby, their grandson.
