MESA, Arizona — Authorities have released the name of an armed man who was fatally shot by Mesa police.

Mesa police say 33-year-old Joshua Deysie was a transient and an acquaintance of the homeowner where the shooting took place Wednesday.

Investigators still are trying to understand why Deysie was agitated, standing in the driveway of a house and waving a handgun at police officers during standoff that lasted about 20 minutes.

Police say Deysie was running in and out of the house, brandishing the gun as officers pleaded with him repeatedly to put the weapon down.

After Deysie allegedly pointed the handgun at police, officers fatally shot him.

Neighbors backed police accounts of the shooting.
