Attorneys for Indiana county treasurer seek dismissal of charges he mishandled public money

Share/Save/Bookmark

MUNCIE, Indiana — Attorneys for a central Indiana county treasurer want charges that he mishandling public money dismissed, arguing that other officials who've done the same thing haven't been prosecuted.

Delaware County Treasurer John Dorer was charged in April with 47 counts, 44 of which involve failing to deposit public money within 24 hours as required by state law.

His attorneys have asked special Judge Dennis Carroll of Madison County to throw out the charges. Their court filing says state audits have found the Delaware County sheriff and officials in each neighboring county haven't met the deposit deadline but not faced criminal charges.

Deputy county prosecutor Eric Hoffman tells The Star Press (http://tspne.ws/1jxk0ag ) that prosecutors will contest the defense assertions.
