FORT WORTH, Texas — The Fort Worth police chief says body and dashboard camera footage supports the actions of an officer who fatally shot a man armed with a baseball bat and a screwdriver.

Chief Jeffrey Halstead identified the officer as E. Gasca on Thursday. Police say the suspect came out of a Fort Worth store late Tuesday night, refused to drop his weapons and charged at officers. Halstead says Gasca tried to retreat for more than 15 feet before he shot the man in the chest.

The man's identity hasn't been released.

Gasca was hired in December 2013 and has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of criminal and internal investigations.
