NEW YORK — Former major league catcher Ronny Paulino has been suspended 100 games for violating the minor league drug program.
The commissioner's office announced the penalty Wednesday. Seattle minor league outfielder Cavan Cohoes drew a 50-game drug ban.
Paulino, who has played for Pittsburgh, Baltimore, the Marlins and the Mets, tested positive for exogenous testosterone, meaning it came from outside the body. The 32-year-old was out of the majors last season and finished up with Detroit's Triple-A team in Toledo.
Paulino was suspended for 50 games in 2010 after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug while in the majors with the Marlins. He said the banned substance came from a diet pill.
Cohoes tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol and a substance related to an anabolic steroid. He is on the roster of the rookie-level Arizona League Mariners.
There have been 12 suspensions this year under the minor league program.
