SOUTH GATE, California — Los Angeles County authorities say police shot and wounded an armed suspect who struggled with residents and then officers after being discovered with two other men in the backyard of a home in South Gate.

Sheriff's Lt. John Corina tells KABC-TV that the wounded man was found hiding under a car after being shot during the confrontation early Monday. Authorities are searching for the two other suspects, who managed to hop a fence and run away after South Gate police arrived.

Corina says they are considered armed and dangerous.

At least one weapon was recovered at the scene.

Investigators say it's unclear what the men were doing in the yard when they were discovered.
