CLEVELAND, Tennessee — Authorities say Cleveland police have fatally shot a man who threatened them with a knife after officers responded to a reported kidnapping.

Media report the suspect, 51-year-old Robert Edwin Eaves, was a convicted sex offender.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is trying to determine the events that led to Eaves' death, but say that he abducted a woman Tuesday morning and took her to a house where a teenager was watching three children.

TBI officials said they are investigating whether he had a relationship with any of the others, but he was threatening the safety of everyone.

A child in the home was able to call a parent, who dialed 911 and two Cleveland officers responded.

The TBI says one or both officers shot the suspect after he tried to assault them.
