SYRACUSE, New York — Authorities have identified two victims of a fire that broke out at a Syracuse apartment complex.

Fire officials say 72-year-old William West died at the scene and 64-year-old Gail West died after she was taken to Upstate University Hospital's burn center.

The blaze broke out at about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday. It took firefighters about 15 to 20 minutes to beat back the flames at the Nob Hill Apartment Complex.

The fire was contained to one apartment, but some units suffered water and smoke damage. All residents were allowed back inside Thursday morning.

Officials say careless smoking caused the fire.
