HUNTINGTON BEACH, California — Orange County residents burned up by a proposal to ban beach fire pits have rallied to uphold their sandy tradition.
The Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/186ISMW ) says Congressman Dana Rohrabacher was among dozens of people who turned out Sunday at Huntington Beach to make s'mores and support the pits, hundreds of which dot Southern California's shoreline.
Residents of nearby Newport Beach want the rings removed, arguing that drifting smoke is a health hazard.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District is expected to vote on a proposed ban on June 7.
Assemblyman Travis Allen, who organized the rally, says the pits are a 60-year-old tradition. He says thousands of people already have signed a petition supporting them.
