Minn. man found incompetent in random shooting

STILLWATER, Minnesota — A judge has found a Minnesota man incompetent to stand trial in a random shooting that killed a 9-year-old boy in February.

Washington County District Judge Gary Schurrer ruled Friday in the case of 34-year-old Nhan Lap Tran of Oakdale. The ruling puts criminal proceedings against Tran on hold.

Tran faces six felony counts after a February 11 shooting rampage in Oakdale that killed Devin Aryal.

Assistant Washington County Attorney Jessica Stott tells the Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/109wLs2) that Tran will be sent to the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter when space becomes available.

The plan is for Tran to receive treatment that could eventually make him competent to participate in his defense at a criminal trial. A review hearing to assess Tran's progress is scheduled for November.
