Queens apartment fire kills 46-year-old woman; 2 firefighters hospitalized


NEW YORK — A woman has died in a fire in a sixth-floor Queens apartment.

Police say the blaze was reported shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday in an apartment on 34th Avenue in Jackson Heights.

Firefighters found 46-year-old Sophia Paz in the bedroom of the burning apartment.

She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Fire officials say two firefighters were hospitalized. Their injuries were not serious.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
