ST. HELENA ISLAND, South Carolina — Two Beaufort County residents have been arrested and charged in the death of their child.

Sheriff's Capt. Joey Woodward told local media that 24-year-old Antonio Coaxum and 25-year-old Dajaa Devon Fields were arrested at their home Saturday night.

Woodward said the St. Helena Island residents are charged with homicide by child abuse.

Six-year-old D'Naja Fields died July 10, two days after family members brought her to Beaufort Memorial Hospital. The girl died at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Neither Woodward nor Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen would talk about the cause of death Sunday.

It was not clear if the couple have attorneys.
