Ohio funeral director gets 3 years for stealing from customers who prepaid for funerals

WARREN, Ohio — A former funeral director in northeast Ohio who admitted stealing more than $250,000 from customers who prepaid for funeral arrangements has been sentenced to three years in prison.

A judge in Warren sentenced 52-year-old Robert McDermott Sr. on Wednesday. The former Niles funeral home director had pleaded guilty to 10 felony charges.

The (Youngstown) Vindicator (http://bit.ly/1ogNuLp ) reports several of McDermott's victims spoke in court, one of them calling him "lower than low."

Judge Ronald Rice said it appears that what McDermott did was "kind of like a Ponzi scheme," where money from new customers paid for the services to earlier customers. Prosecutors said he failed to put money for prepaid funeral arrangements into a trust account or insurance policy.

He'll have to pay restitution when he gets out of prison.
