BROWNSVILLE, Texas — A Brownsville man seriously injured when a package he opened exploded inside his home has pleaded guilty to a federal drug charge.
Jesus Juarez pleaded guilty in federal court in Brownsville on Monday to possession with intent to distribute more than 100 kilograms of marijuana. Juarez, Iviz Machado and their 5-year-old daughter were all seriously injured in the January explosion at their suburban Brownsville home.
Court documents show the investigation into that explosion led authorities to Juarez's involvement in drug smuggling. Investigators believe Juarez's loss of more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana was the motivation for the package bomb left at his home.
Juarez's sentencing is scheduled for February.
