Officials: 2 women die in apartment fire on Chicago's Northwest Side; police investigating

CHICAGO — Chicago authorities say two women have died in an apartment fire on the city's Northwest Side.

Chicago Police Department Bomb and Arson detectives responded to the scene late Thursday night. Chicago Fire Department officials say the building structure never caught fire but something was burning inside the basement unit where the women lived.

Authorities haven't identified the women but say they were in their 20s. They say the women didn't have smoke detectors.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office could not immediately confirm the fatalities when contacted by the Chicago Sun-Times.
