OSAGE, Iowa — Osage residents are awaiting the addition of a new cupola atop the Mitchell County Courthouse now in the midst of construction.

Workers are currently constructing the cupola and preparing the courthouse roof in the area it will be placed, The Mason City Globe Gazette reported (http://bit.ly/1AUxqSP ).

Mitchell County tore down its 1858 courthouse last February, despite efforts by local residents to save the Mitchell County landmark. County leaders said the courthouse was falling apart and determined the structure was too unstable to save.

Unlike the 1858 courthouse, the new courthouse and cupola will face west.

County supervisors had planned to save the old courthouse cupola before razing the rest of the 155-year-old building, but abandoned that effort after receiving estimates that saving it would cost about $20,000. Experts also told supervisors the structure might collapse before reaching the ground.

Last year, county leaders approved construction of the new $8.7 million courthouse, which is being funded through the sale of general obligation bonds. The new courthouse is being built on the site of the old one.

Mitchell County Supervisor Joel Voaklander said the new courthouse is on schedule to open in August.
