PHILADELPHIA — Police say a man carrying a gun was shot after turning the weapon toward officers in west Philadelphia overnight.

Police said officers responded to a report of a man with a weapon shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday in the Carroll Park neighborhood.

A police spokesman said the man saw an officer coming and ran up the street but was met by another officer approaching him.

They said he turned back and pointed the weapon at the first officer, prompting two officers to fire, wounding him the torso.

The 17-year-old man was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was reported in critical condition. The gun was recovered at the scene.
