BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Boca Juniors defeated Olimpo 2-1 Sunday as the new-look Argentine first-division opened play this weekend with 30 teams instead of 20.

Sebastian Palacios scored the winner in the 74th, and another 12 minutes later, to go with a first-half goal from Fernando Gago. Jonathan Blanco scored for Olimpo in the first half.

Under the new format, the season runs until November when one champion will be crowned, replacing the split-season format used in much of Latin America.

Defending Racing Club got off to a rough start, losing Saturday 1-0 to Rosario. San Lorenzo, among the favorites, defeated Colon 2-0.

In other matches Sunday, Lanus defeated Quilmes 1-0, and Union defeated Huracan 1-0.
