Alexandria will give up to $2.8 million to help fund construction of community college campus

ALEXANDRIA, Louisiana — The city of Alexandria has committed up to $2.8 million to help build a new downtown campus for Central Louisiana Technical Community College.

The Town Talk reported ( the City Council on Tuesday approved an ordinance to implement the city's Community College Initiative and to authorize Mayor Jacques Roy to take related actions.

Plans call for the campus, now located on South MacArthur Drive, to be built in an area across Murray Street from the federal courthouse in downtown Alexandria. The cost would be nearly $22 million, with the city providing up to $2.8 million.

The City Council had previously committed chipping in $2.3 million, but officials recently learned Alexandria would have to increase its share to reach the 12 percent required match.

The city's match will be mostly cash but could include property and infrastructure improvements.

Roy has called locating the campus downtown as a top goal for the city, saying it would generate about $50 million in economic from construction and much more from its long-term presence.

"We would be derelict in our duties not to make this investment with this opportunity in front of us," Roy said.

The ordinance approved by the council declares a public purpose for city funding for the project and authorizes matching funds and support services.
