Western New York cops kill attacking pit bull; dog sinks teeth into officer's bulletproof vest

LOCKPORT, New York — Authorities say two western New York police officers had to kill a pit bull after the dog attacked them while they were investigating a trespassing complaint over the weekend.

Police in Lockport in Niagara County tell the Niagara Gazette ( ) that the officers responded to a call about suspicious activity at a vacant property around 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

Officials say the dog broke through a locked gate between the front and backyards, then jumped at one of the officers and tried to bite his face.

The officer used Mace at first, but it had no effect. The other officer drew his weapon and shot the dog, which sank its teeth into the officer's bulletproof vest. One or two more shots were fired, killing the dog.
