GALESBURG, Illinois — A Galesburg woman has been sentenced to nine years in prison in connection with a hit-and-run accident that killed a Knox College student in October 2012.
WGIL Radio reports (http://bit.ly/1bEwW5r) that 34-year-old Lakeesha Smith was sentenced Wednesday in Knox County court. She pleaded guilty in August to reckless homicide and leaving the scene of an accident involving death.
Police contend Knox College junior Tundun Lawani was crossing the street when Smith struck and killed her. Authorities say Smith was found hours later at her home.
Smith apologized in court but Judge Scott Shipplett said her actions after the accident didn't reflect remorse.
