Pedestrian was struck and killed by box truck in Newark, Delaware

NEWARK, Delaware — Delaware State Police say a pedestrian trying to cross Pulaski Highway in Newark was struck and killed by a box truck.

It happened about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday near Wellington Drive. Troopers say 37-year-old Jamaal Matthews of Wilmington, who was not in a marked crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing, was trying to cross the westbound lanes of Pulaski highway.

Police say a car swerved and avoided hitting Matthews, but then Matthews was hit by a box truck driven by 44-year-old Zuavey Kadafi of Bear.

Matthews was pronounced dead at the scene. Kadafi was not hurt.

The crash is under investigation.
