Weather service says EF1 tornadoes damaged barns, home in Montgomery, Franklin counties

Two tornadoes with winds around 100 mph have damaged farms in western and southeastern Indiana.

The National Weather Service on Wednesday confirmed two EF1 tornadoes hit the state the night before.

Meteorologist Dave Tucek (too-SEHK') tells The Associated Press it appears a tornado struck near the Montgomery County town of New Ross based on video of the storm and damage.

One with maximum winds of 95 mph touched down near the Franklin County town of Mt. Carmel and traveled more than a mile on the ground, damaging sheds and larger buildings on three farms. Mt. Carmel is about 70 miles southeast of Indianapolis.

A second tornado with maximum winds topping 100 mph was on the ground for about half a mile near the Montgomery County town of New Ross, about 30 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

The weather service also was checking out reports of brief tornadoes near Columbus and the community of Yeddo in Fountain County.
