Armed man dead, flak-jacket-wearing police officer hurt in shootout at Houston apartment block

HOUSTON — A gunman is dead and a Houston police officer was injured in a shootout on a north Houston street.

The incident happened about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday when a 911 caller described the suspect, saying he had a gun and appeared to be smoking marijuana. Two officers arrived, and the suspect wrestled with one officer, falling to the ground.

Police Chief Charles McClelland says Officer John Calhoun was shot once but was able to fire several shots of his own, striking the gunman fatally. However, McClelland says a protective vest protected Calhoun from the bullet, receiving only a deep bruise to his left side. Calhoun was treated at Memorial Hermann Hospital and discharged.

Calhoun, who's 28, will be placed on desk duty during an internal investigation. The gunman's identity remains undisclosed.
