Trial underway for East Tennessee man charged with homicide in crash that killed 3

SEVIERVILLE, Tennessee — The trial has begun for an East Tennessee man charged in a wreck that killed three people.

Media reports say Shaun Russell Dunlap is facing charges of reckless vehicular homicide, reckless homicide and reckless aggravated assault in the 2012 crash that killed 26-year-old Ashish Dembla and his parents, 57-year-old Satpal Dembla and 51-year-old Anjali Dembla, and injured his sister.

Witnesses testifying Thursday said they saw Dunlap's truck cross the center line "once or twice" as the vehicle traveled on Wears Valley Road in Sevier County headed toward Townsend.

Defense attorney Joe Costner said his client told troopers he might have fallen asleep but wasn't sure. Costner argued prosecutors haven't shown that Dunlap acted with gross negligence. He says there's no law on how much sleep is required before driving.
