HELENA, Montana — A spokesman for the Montana Democratic Party says its executive director is stepping down after less than two years on the job.

Andrea Marcoccio's last day as executive director will be Feb. 13, Bryan Watt said.

Marcoccio took the position in April 2013 to guide efforts during the 2014 election cycle. Democrats took some hits in the November elections, including the loss in Montana of the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrats for more than a century.

Marcoccio did not say why she is resigning, but she said she's proud of the work she and her staff accomplished during what she called "an unprecedented cycle in Montana politics." One accomplishment she touted was the creation of an annual event to empower female Democrats. Before Marcoccio took the executive director post, a woman hadn't held the job for the party since the 1990s.

As for the future, Marcoccio said she'll be "working on a variety of local projects in the coming months."

Party Chair Jim Larson said in a statement that Marcoccio's leadership would be missed.

"Andrea brought a tenacity and drive to the Montana Democratic Party that strengthened Montana Democrats," Larson said. "(We) know she will continue to be a leading voice in Montana politics."

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Director Lauren Caldwell will serve as the interim director of the party.
