Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies accuse east Mesa woman of animal cruelty; Dog still alive

PHOENIX — Authorities say an east Mesa woman is in custody for alleged animal cruelty.

Maricopa County Sheriff's officials say 44-year-old Wendy Darlene Davis was arrested Wednesday.

They say the female pitbull mix named Shelby was so severely malnourished by the lack of attention on the part of her owner.

The dog was scheduled to be euthanized, but is still alive and could possibly recover.

Sheriff's detectives say the dog is blind in both eyes, diabetic and has other unidentified ailments.

During an interview with detectives, they say Davis admitted she has never taken her dog to a veterinarian for treatment and knew Shelby was suffering.

It was unclear Thursday is Davis has a lawyer yet.
