Panel recommends 3 people for vacant District Court judgeship

HELENA, Montana — The Judicial Nomination Commission has submitted three applications to the governor for the position of District Court judge for the 16th Judicial District.

The district covers seven counties in eastern Montana.

Gov. Steve Bullock will be picking someone to fill a spot vacated by the February death of District Judge Gary Day.

The applicants the panel sent to Bullock are Garry Bunke, Michael Hayworth, and Sheila Newman. The governor has 30 days to pick from the list.

The appointee will serve until January 2015. The post will be on the ballot in 2014 and that successful candidate will serve the remainder of Day's term, which expires in January 2019.
