State Police: 2 dead, 2 injured after crash on State Road 18 between Lovington and Hobbs

HOBBS, New Mexico — Authorities in New Mexico say two people are dead and two others injured after a crash on State Road 18 between Lovington and Hobbs.

State Police say the collision occurred about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday and the drivers of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene.

The two men were identified Wednesday as 24-year-old Salvador Aguirre of Lovington and 30-year-old Jonathan Maldonado of Los Lunas.

The passengers in both vehicles were transported by air ambulance to a hospital at Lubbock, Texas.

Police say one person is in serious condition and the other is in critical.

Their names and hometowns haven't been released.

Police say their investigation is continuing but it appears the driver of one car fell asleep at the wheel and his car collided head-on with the other vehicle.
