Lawyers for man charged with killing Va. trooper say his sanity will be factor in defense

DINWIDDIE, Virginia — Defense lawyers have requested a psychological evaluation of a man charged with killing a Virginia State Police trooper.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch ( ) reports that Russell E. Brown III's public defenders say in a court filing that his sanity will be a significant factor in his defense.

A motion filed by Brown's lawyers in Dinwiddie Circuit Court seeks the appointment of a clinical psychologist to evaluate him. Defense lawyers also have requested the pool of potential members of the county's grand jury during the past five years.

Brown faces eight felony counts, including capital murder. He is charged with fatally shooting 63-year-old Trooper Junius A. Walker in the officer's police cruiser on Interstate 85 in March 2014.
