Bismarck man sentenced to more than 4 years in federal prison on 4 illegal weapons charges

FARGO, North Dakota — A North Dakota man has been sentenced to 4½ years in prison on illegal weapons charges.

Brandon Zelmer, of Bismarck, was charged in federal court with two counts of possession of firearms by a convicted felon and two counts possession of stolen firearms. He pleaded guilty in August.

The 28-year-old Zelmer has previous felony convictions for forgery, burglary, theft of property and criminal trespass.

Defense attorneys had asked for a sentence of 66 months in prison to run at the same time as his sentence in state court on a burglary charge. Prosecutors said the time should be added on to the state sentence, and U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson agreed.
