Phoenix police identify man fatally shot during alleged assault on officer seated in vehicle

PHOENIX — Phoenix police have identified man fatally shot when he allegedly tried to assault an officer seated in his patrol vehicle.

Police spokesman Steve Martos says the man killed in the Sunday morning incident was 25-year-old Willie Harden.

The state Department of Corrections' website says a person of that name and age served a prison term on a Maricopa County Superior Court conviction for armed robbery before being released Sept. 4.

Martos said previously a sergeant was doing paperwork while sitting in a parking lot near McDowell Road and 58th Avenue when a man walked up.

Martos said the sergeant rolled down the window to see if the man needed help.

Martos said an altercation followed and the man reached into the car and the officer fired his gun.
