HELENA, Montana — A 72-year-old Montana State Prison inmate has died five days before he was eligible for release.

The state Department of Corrections says William Bernard Bergin died Tuesday of natural causes. His death wasn't announced until Thursday because officials were trying to notify his family.

The department says Bergin would have been eligible for discharge on Sunday.

He had served sentences for drunken driving and drug charges from Yellowstone and Cascade counties dating to April 1992.
