JACKSON, Mississippi — The Mississippi Supreme Court declined Thursday to hear an appeal from Dexter Watson, who was seeking a new trial on grounds that prosecutors failed to prove he killed his girlfriend in 2011.
Watson was convicted of murder in Claiborne County in 2012 in the death of Patricia Dotson. He was sentenced to life in prison. The state Court of Appeals upheld his conviction in March.
Prosecutors say Dotson's body was found behind First Baptist Church in Port Gibson. She had been stabbed and beaten. Authorities say Watson and Dotson had an ongoing relationship.
The Appeals Court said although Watson told several versions of how Dotson died, he admitted that he was with her when she died. Also, the court said the blood on Watson's shoes was found to be Dotson's.
