Toluca beats Atlas 2-0 to go 2nd in Mexican league; America consolidates lead


MEXICO CITY — Toluca beat Atlas 2-0 on Sunday to leapfrog its opponent into second place in the Mexican first division.

Antonio Rios opened the scoring for Toluca in the 48th minute with a curling shot into the top right corner, and Issac Brizuela added the second with a 40-yard chip in stoppage time after Atlas goalkeeper Federico Vilar headed a clearance that fell at his feet.

America remains top of the league after beating Monterrey 2-0 on Saturday, with Pablo Aguilar heading the host into the lead in the 49th and Oribe Peralta doubling the advantage in the 79th into the empty net after taking it past Monterrey goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco.

In other matches this weekend, Morelia lost 1-0 to Veracruz, Tijuana defeated Queretaro 2-1, Puebla drew 1-1 with Leones Negros, Tigres overcame Cruz Azul 1-0, reigning champion Leon beat Chivas 2-1, Pumas drew 1-1 with Pachuca at home, and Chiapas beat Santos Laguna 2-0.
