NORMAN, Oklahoma — The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office has released the names of two deputies involved in a fatal shooting following a traffic stop during the weekend.

Sheriff Joe Lester said in a news release Wednesday that the deputies are Cody Shobe and Chris Noel and that both are on paid leave.

The department has said 27-year-old Nicholas Popplewell of Norman died at a hospital after being shot just before 9 a.m. Saturday.

Lester says the driver told officers there were drugs in the vehicle and that Popplewell tried to escape by getting into Noel's patrol car as Shobe tried to stop him before being dragged a short distance. The sheriff says Noel then opened fire and struck Popplewell.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested on drug charges.
