Billings store security employee sentenced for embezzling just over $9K

BILLINGS, Montana — A 34-year-old woman whose job was to prevent theft at a Target store in Billings has been sentenced for embezzling just over $9,000 from the store.

The Billings Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/194Gynt ) District Judge Susan Watters agreed Thursday to defer Rachel Marie Purcell's sentence for two years because Purcell had no criminal record and had paid $9,069 in restitution.

Purcell was working as the "assets protection team leader" at a Target store when company officials noticed significant cash shortages last June. She was initially asked to investigate.

Later, the company sent an investigator who found a store surveillance camera was inexplicably turned off during the thefts. The investigator installed another camera that captured Purcell taking money from a locked cash drawer.
