Jury clears Saratoga County teenager of murder charges; says it was self defense

VICTORY, New York — A grand jury has cleared an 18-year-old upstate New York man in the stabbing death of his mother's boyfriend.

Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy says the jury dismissed all charges against Matthew Brown on Tuesday for the death of 32-year-old Derick Clark.

Brown stabbed Clark in the neck during a dispute in the home the two shared with the teen's mother in Victory, New York. Investigators say Clark threw her out of the way and forced his way into a bedroom where Brown had retreated. During the ensuing struggle, Clark was stabbed with a folding pocket knife that punctured an artery.

Evidence showed that Brown called 911 immediately, but the victim died from massive blood loss within minutes despite emergency life-saving efforts.

The stabbing was ruled self-defense.
