PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia police say an off-duty officer fired eight shots at an armed man who attempted to mug him as he walked his dog after his shift.

They say it's unclear if any of the shots hit the man, who hid behind cars before fleeing late Wednesday in the city's Overbrook section.

Police are using K-9 units and a helicopter with thermal imaging technology to search for him. They're also checking hospitals for patients with bullet wounds.

Police say the officer opened fire after the suspect pulled a gun on him around 11:30 p.m. The suspect may have also fired his weapon.

Several parked cars were hit. The officer was not injured.

Overbrook is where police say three teens killed 51-year-old James Stuhlman as he walked his dog last month.
