GREENVILLE, South Carolina — Authorities say a Greenville man is charged with murder in the death of a 39-year-old woman who disappeared in September.
Investigators said Samuel Hawkins Jr. was arrested Monday, five days after the remains of Misty Johnson were found on a dead-end street near Interstate 85. Investigators say Hawkins and Johnson knew each other.
Police say Hawkins told investigators he was never at Johnson's house when evidence showed he was.
Hawkins is being held without bail at the Greenville County jail. Attorney Grant Varner said his client is innocent. Varner said Hawkins knew he was a suspect for seven weeks and didn't run away. He also said his client voluntarily submitted a DNA sample.
Varner couldn't talk about the evidence because he doesn't know what police are basing their charge on.
