DETROIT — Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Gary Peters says he raised $2.3 million in the third quarter, calling it his best three months of fundraising as the race winds down.

Peters on Wednesday released his July-September results, reflecting pre-primary and general election fundraising. The Associated Press left a message with Republican candidate Terri Lynn Land's campaign spokeswoman seeking fundraising details.

The Peters campaign didn't release reports with specific fundraising and spending. Wednesday is the deadline for candidates to release quarterly financial reports.

Peters is a third-term congressman from suburban Detroit. Land is a former Michigan secretary of state.

Peters has been leading in recent polls in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Carl Levin. The contest has generated substantial out-of-state money as the Republicans try to take control of the Senate.
