WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — A man who previously spent more than three decades in a New York prison for killing two people has been sentenced to life in prison for a Florida murder.

As part of a deal with Palm Beach County prosecutors to avoid the death penalty, 58-year-old Serge Alexander Motti pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree murder, attempted murder and other charges.

Authorities say Motti had arranged to meet with 22-year-old Jenard Frederick for a drug deal in July, but Motti ended up fatally shooting Frederick in the back of the head. Officials say Motti then shot Frederick's girlfriend and ran over her with a car, but she survived.

The Palm Beach Post (http://goo.gl/PUOmmQ ) reports that Motti was previously convicted in the 1978 slayings of a dog breeder and her assistant in upstate New York.
