Man faces murder charge in death of girlfriend's 20-month-old son in Lafourche Parish

THIBODAUX, Louisiana — A 24-year-old man has been arrested, accused in the death of his girlfriend's 20-month-old son.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre says Emmanuel Hernandez, a Mexican National, was booked late Tuesday after being transferred from the custody of immigration officials.

The sheriff's office says Hernandez lived with his girlfriend and her son, Enmanuel Gonzales, in Cut Off. On May 15, authorities say the child was having trouble breathing and was taken to an area hospital. The toddler was subsequently transferred to Children's Hospital in New Orleans where doctors say his injuries were consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome. The child was eventually removed from life support over the weekend.

Hernandez, who was not in the country legally, was booked with second-degree murder and is being held in lieu of $1 million bond.
