MONTPELIER, Vt. — Sales of 'I Am Vermont Strong' commemorative license plates haven't been as strong as initially thought.
The plates were introduced in February in response to Tropical Storm Irene. By April, a public event attended by Gov. Peter Shumlin proclaimed sales had reached 25,000.
Motor Vehicle Commissioner Robert Ide said Thursday there was a miscommunication with the governor's office — the 25,000 represented the number of license plates manufactured, not sold.

The Burlington Free Press reports (http://bfpne.ws/JRqQ4N) 28,035 plates have come off the assembly line at Vermont Correctional Industries. Of those, 7,832 have been sold to car and truck owners and 9,990 have been sent to vendors who made bulk orders.
The goal is to sell 50,000 to raise about $1 million for Irene disaster aid and the Vermont Food Bank.
