Coroner says cause of western Pennsylvania county jail inmate's death still pending tests

UNIONTOWN, Pennsylvania — The Fayette County coroner says he's still trying to determine why a woman died after she was jailed shortly after visiting a hospital emergency room.

Dr. Phillip Reilly says 27-year-old Jeana Scott, of Newell went to the Uniontown Hospital emergency room for an undisclosed problem and was discharged about 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Before she could leave, Uniontown police interviewed and arrested Scott. Online court records show she was jailed on receiving stolen property and other charges stemming from an incident in July 2013.

Early Sunday, Scott began having trouble breathing and was taken to the county jail's nurse, where her vital signs suddenly got worse.

Jail officials called 911, and she was taken back to the hospital where she died shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday.

The coroner says autopsy results and other tests are pending.
